Anjana Bhowmik (Bengali: অঞ্জনা ভৌমিক) was an actress of Bengali cinema from the 1960s until the 1980s. She was born on December 30, 1944 in Cooch Behar. Her real name is Arati Bhowmik and nickname Babli. Her father was Bibhuti Bhusan Bhowmik. She spent her school days in Cooch Behar. She passed the Higher Secondary Exam of West Bengal Board from Suniti Academy of Cooch Behar in 1961. After that she also studied in Sarojini Naidu College, an undergraduate college, then affiliated with the University of Calcutta.
She made her film debut at the age of 20 in the 1964 film “Anustup Chanda” directed by Pijush Bose. Before releasing the film she changed her name to Anjana from Arati. Right from the first film she became popular. Her acting talent was praised not only by the audience but also by the critic. She became one of the major heroines of Uttam Kumar. She and Uttam Kumar gave major hits likeChowringhe, “Kokhono Megh”, “Nayika Sambad”, “Roudra Chhaya”, “Raj Drohi”. At a certain time of her career when critics predicted she wouldn’t be successful without Uttam Kumar as hero, she paired with Soumitra Chattopadhyay in “Mahashweta” and it was highly acclaimed.
Anjana got married to Navy Officer Anil Sharma and now settled in Mumbai. Her daughters Nilanjana Sharma and Chandana Sharma [1] are also actresses. The older one, Nilanjana Sharma is married to Bengali Actor Jishu Sen Gupta.
Manjiri Phadnis started her career with Rok Sako To Rok Lo in 2004, but her big break was Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na (2008) as the lead actor's girlfriend. Earlier she was part of the National Film Award-winning Bengali feature film Faltu and the highly unsuccessful Mumbai Salsa.
In 2008, her Telugu debut film Siddu From Srikakulam released, following which her first Tamil film Muthirai got released. Both performed poorly at the box office. Notably, she had sung a song under the direction of Yuvan Shankar Raja for Muthirai.[4][5]
In September 2009 she signed to appear in a series of Onida television commercials. In 2011, she also appeared in an ad film for iBall brand of pen drvies. Her 2010 releases were the Telugu films Inkosaari and Shubhapradham. Her latest movies include the long-pending I Am 24 and the Walt Disney-produced superhero film Zokkomon, starring Darsheel Safary in the titular role.
